Humanity's future depends on discovering sustainable solutions. Yet we hear so little about it.
SustainLab is a newsletter about sustainability, attending particularly to the multiple sciences that inform sustainability research and actions.
I write about what’s working (and not working) in sustainability, share sustainability research and on-the-ground experiences, and reflect on the scientific, economic, and political realities regarding humanity’s sustainable future. Whether you’re engaged in sustainability efforts or simply care about the world we’re leaving to future generations, I hope you’ll find ideas, connections, and purpose in SustainLab.
What’s new in your world?
Please share your victories, challenges, disappointments and lessons for others in the comments, or send them to me directly. I live in the U.S., but I’m interested in sustainability news and efforts from anywhere and everywhere.
A bit about me
I’m a longtime multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary science journalist having served on staff at Science, American Scientist, and St. Louis Public Radio, part of the NPR network. I also helped to launch the news section of PNAS (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences) and contributed to The Science Writers’ Handbook. Currently, I freelance and teach in Harvard’s journalism program.
My written, audio, video, and multimedia work has also appeared in Nature, The Discovery Channel, FT, OpenMind, ScienceNow, The Dallas Morning News, and many other outlets. In recognition of my journalism work, the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard awarded me a year-long fellowship, which I used to study issues trust in science and in journalism. SustainLab evolved from research I began that fellowship year—the first year of the coronavirus pandemic—and subsequent work at the Global Virus Network.
